Town of Zlaté Hory is grateful to medieval gold mining for its existence. Important time in the history of Zlaté Hory was the 13th century, when monumental fortress Edelštejn was built as a protection of gold mines. Beneath this fortress grew up a small mining settlement called Zuckmantel (which was one of first names of Zlaté Hory), which obtained the town privileges in 1306. Due to its location on the border of principality of Opava were Zlaté Hory an object of frequent conflicts with neighbouring episcopacy. This conflict was finished in 1474 when Zlaté Hory, together with the gold mines, came for a long time under the government of Vratislav episcopacy.
